TOP FIVE REASONS TO
CULTIVATE YOUR CREATIVITY
by
Lael Johnson

Cultivating your creativity means more than spending time with a hobby or performing and displaying your work. Cultivating your creativity takes time, awareness and deliberate action.   Creativity like any other skill, needs to be nurtured and affirmed, as well as directed, in order to expand throughout your life.   Creativity crosses all barriers and cultures. Styles may differ and philosophies may change, but creativity never changes.   It’s time to put away whatever negative influences you’ve heard about creativity. Make no more room for those starving artist scenarios.  Let’s begin to explore what creativity really is.

REASON 1:  Creativity is born in movement, be it physical, intellectual or spiritual or any combination of the three. When you are on the move, in any part of your life, then you are either creating or preparing to create.

REASON 2: Training yourself to create art regularly intervals contributes significantly to making an idea work by exploring, expanding, building,  and performing or sharing creativity.

REASON 3: The creative process takes time. However, it can be structured and directed  so that you finish your creative projects on or before your deadline.

REASON 4: Creativity stretches your comfort zone. Practicing a creative skill, takes time, concentrated effort and consistent work. I know that I feel angry when I’m in the early stages of the learning process. I struggle to admit that I need to practice and that I don’t know everything. Then, my discomfort level increases.. When I am willing to complete one creative project. I know that I’ve done a good job.  My challenge is to  patiently go through the earlier mechanical  learning for as I need to do o. My reward is to become more automatic in my creative skills   and completing more projects in less time.

REASON 5: Creativity is fun. I can spread out all of my options, choose the one that is right for right now.  As I’ve said before, it’s even more fun, when the skills become automatic. When I say automatic, I’m not describing performing without feeling. I’m describing the ease of a good performer, who is free to interpret a piece, without worrying about making any noticeable mistakes during his performance.
